False friends – Cognados falsos

With the AS Spanish exam tomorrow I am doing a revision lesson in the morning + I will go over some of the common false friends in Spanish to have them fresh in my students’ heads. The resources are pretty self-explanatory + the card activity has to be cut up for them to match the words up following the presentation of them on the PowerPoint. ¡Suerte!

Saltando hacia la locura – El “balconing”

The resources in this post relate to the dangerous practice of “balconing” (leaping from hotel balconies into swimming pools) which has led to so many injuries and deaths in recent years. Indeed, I read in ¡Qué! Diario that just today a 23 years old British woman was killed doing this (QUE DIARIO 7 May). Clearly this is tragic but I hope that this resource will go some way to raising awareness about this deadly fad.

¡Ay, Carmela! – Research Based Essay

This post will be of very restricted interest. I may be lucky if even one person out there finds a use for this stuff! Sorry!

Those of us teaching A Level Spanish in England and Wales using the EdExcel board, we have to prepare students to write an essay in the exam on a chosen cultural topic. I have been teaching the film ¡Ay, Carmela! by Carlos Saura. I love this film because of its cultural depth and the fast array of things that students can learn from it. In a site I created a few years ago I have already posted a variety of resources to support teaching this film (link below), but here I want to share some exemplar essays I have produced to help students get an idea of the sort of thing they should write. They are not prefect by any stretch of the imagination, but they provide some extra support + hopefully someone else might find them useful sometime.

El acoso escolar

This is intended for A level + I will be using it shortly with my A2 group in preparation for the forthcoming examinations. It is revision of an earlier topic but my aim is to reinforce language related to discrimination, etc. I also aim to get them to discuss the issues and to use subjunvtive phrases as far as possible in preparation for prose translation and for their own essay writing technique. The essay title “¿Por qué rechazamos a cierta gente? En tu opinión, ¿qué medidas se deben tomar para que no exista la intolerancia?” clearly relates to more than bullying, but the language covered in the lesson should give them some support in writing their own response to this essay title.

The PowerPoint starts with some pictures which are intended for debate + trying to get the students to identify the issue. As usual the videos are embedded but if they do not work when you download the PPT, the videos are posted below. As I have pointed out in other posts, for embedded video to work you need the latest version of Windows.

El futuro de los jóvenes españoles

The resources in this post are an extension of an earlier post on future plans – http://mfljones.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/que-hara-el-gato/ . I want to get my class to think about future planning from the point of view of young people in Spain today where youth unemployment is at almost 50%. The PowerPoint has a video exercise which I realise is very difficulty but the main purpose of it is to get a general sense of the pessimism that exists and to point out the high rate of unemployment. The video is available below + on YouTube. In slide 1 it is interesting to point out how the unemployment rate in Spain compares to other countries in Europe. This is all followed by a reading activity which is based on real statistics drawn from a recent survey carried out in Spain.

AS EdExcel Unit 2 Section C

The title of the post says it all! This resource is VERY exam focused. My AS group have been struggling with the written section of the examination in which they have to write between 200-220 words relating to a stimulus text addressing four or more bullet points listed. This is with the EdExcel exam board. The booklet below is produced with this task in mind with lots of examples as well as some recap on grammar and useful language. This will probably only be of interest to a small group of people, but this part of the exam carries a lot of points, so I want my students to do their best and hopefully practice will make perfect!

La siesta

The resources below are for an A level lesson on the topic of the siesta + sleep. This is within the general topic area of health. As well as developing awareness of this aspect of Spanish culture I have tried to focus on the imperative as well as the use of modal verbs. The listening activity on the siesta is taken from the excellent Notes in Spanish website. The videos are below + you may need to embed them into the PowerPoint yourself, although I have put the links to YouTube on the relevant slides.

¿Una dieta sana?

The resources below all relate to diet. There are a few video items which are embedded into the PowerPoint. I cannot upload macro PowerPoints to this blog so you may have to embed the videos yourself. Alternatively the links to the videos are posted on the relevant pages. The listening activity on the 6th slide is developed from the resources on the “ssl4you – Español Segunda Lengua para Todos” website which is always a great source of listening material for A level groups. Both of the reading activities are from items I have found in the newspaper Qué Diario which you can download Monday to Friday in PDF form from their website www.que.es . Finally the videos in the PowerPoint are below in case they do not work in the presentation.

En tu mochila …. un bocata cada día

I’m working with my AS Spanish group on the topic of health. The following resource is based on a campaign in schools in the Basque Country where they are encouraging kids to eat sandwiches. The PowerPoint presents the campaign website (the picture in the second slide has a hyperlink to the site) as well as a clip from the news on Cuatro. Afer presenting some vocabulary using pictures there is a slide where the students get to see a list of useful words + then these are covered up for the students to reproduce them. As for the video clip, this is embedded into the PowerPoint + available below.

Enjuto Mojamuto

I was introduced to this cartoon today (thanks, Paloma!) + I love it. Here are some great examples which can be used when looking at the topic of technology / internet with AS/A2 students.
